Background

The SUPEERA project aims to support two flagships initiative of the European Union, the SET-Plan and the Clean Energy Transition

Europe’s strategic long-term vision, a Clean Planet for all, strongly relies on the Clean Energy Transition to achieve a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions economy by 2050. The energy transition will consist in a socially fair and cost-efficient process moving from fossil fuels to a clean energy system based on increased use of renewable energy sources, their systemic integration and the reduction of remaining greenhouse gas emissions. It will encompass the technological, societal, economic and political dimensions of human interactions and will require cross-sectorial, collaborative and effective actions to become a reality.

The Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) is an essential framework to foster the Clean Energy Transition in Europe. It sets the roadmap by which the EU aims to meet its Energy Union targets by 2030, helping aligning R&I priorities between the European Commission, EU Member States and the industry. It is therefore necessary to support the realisation of the existing framework, while setting the direction in coordination with new and long-term EU climate policies pertaining to the Clean Energy Transition. The SET-Plan is supported by the open access SET-Plan Information System (SETIS) that provides up-to-date information on its activities covering all research and innovation priorities of the Energy Union. The SET-Plan is further supported by the European Technology and Innovation Platforms (ETIPs), and the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA), representing the research community.

The European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) is today the largest energy research community in Europe. As the formal research pillar of the SET-Plan, EERA is strategically positioned to optimize and facilitate the convergence of national research efforts, not only towards the priorities of the SET-Plan, but also to address the challenges pertaining to the Clean Energy Transition.
